A Study on the Concept of Hochschild¡¯s Emotive Dissonance for the Development of an Art-Therapy Program for Emotional Workers
Kim Ik-Jin

Abstract
Are there any significant differences between Hochschild¡¯s 'emotive dissonance' and Morris & Feldman¡¯s 'emotional dissonance'? In this paper, as a first step to find the answer, we analyzed Hochschild¡¯s texts concerning the concept. The results of this study on emotional labor focused on the concept of emotive dissonance of Hochschild can be summarized as follows: First, the emotive dissonance refers to all four forms of dissonance that cause discomfort among the three elements of emotional exchange: feeling rules, surface acting, and deep acting. Second, there is a fundamental difference in the process of organizing emotive dissonance and cognitive dissonance, just as cognitive and emotional systems do not work in the same way. Therefore, the efficiency is limited in inducing the transformation of cognition as part of efforts to reduce the emotive dissonance. Finally, emotive dissonance is a key criterion for measuring the extent of the pain caused by the emotional labor. The phenomenal harm to the existence of emotive dissonance is alienation and burn out ; the most serious emotional pain in modern society. In order to live with these negative consequences, we must constantly supplement our emotional energy. That is the most important role of art-therapy.
